Hearing Screening

Hearing Screening is a service provided by technicians that have been trained by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Screening is done at many locations throughout Saginaw County, including the Main Health Department location (Room 505); and local preschools, elementary schools, and middle schools.

Service is provided to children in Head Start, preschool, kindergarten, second, fourth, and sixth grades, and with any parent or teacher request. Any person 18 years or younger is eligible to receive a hearing screening. To schedule an appointment, call 989-758-3890.

How much does the service cost?

This is a free service provided by the Saginaw County Health Department.

What causes a child to have problems with hearing?

The most common causes are wax buildup in the ears, fluid in ears, or a foreign object.

What should I do if my child does not pass the screening?

The first step would be to have an exam by your health care provider. If the problem persists, your health care provider may consider referring to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist.

You also have the option of having your child retested at the Health Department before seeking medical treatment.

Vision Screening

Vision screening is a service provided by technicians who have been trained by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Service is provided to children in Head Start, preschool, first, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth grades, and with any parent or teacher request. Any person 18 years or younger is eligible to receive a vision screening.

What if I can't afford an eye doctor?

The Hearing and Vision Program may be able to assist you with obtaining a free eye exam and treatment. A limited number of people are able to receive assistance through the Lens Crafter’s Gift of Sight program or Healthy Futures. If you do not qualify for government aid or private health care assistance that covers the cost of routine eye or vision care, VISION USA can help. VISION USA provides basic eye health and vision care services free of charge to uninsured, low-income people and their families. Applications are available by visiting the American Optometric Association.
